At present, Russian legislation does not require mandatory registration for individuals or legal entities engaging in the purchase or sale of cryptocurrency on their own behalf. This position is also confirmed by the Bank of Russia in its official commentary. The purchase and sale of cryptocurrency are treated as transactions involving property and, in themselves, do not require a license or any special legal status. However, when income is generated from such transactions, individuals and companies incur tax obligations. In the case of legal entities, this also entails accounting and bookkeeping requirements. It is important to note that this applies specifically to transactions carried out on one’s own behalf. Engaging in such activities on behalf of third parties, or as part of a regular service (e.g., operating an exchange), may require separate legal assessment.
